Songwriters at Play Tribute to Merle Haggard & Iris Dement

  • Moonstone Cellars 812 Cornwall Street Cambria, CA, 93428 United States (map)

Songwriters at Play Celebrates Merle Haggard & Iris Dement.

Merle Haggard was an American country music singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler. He's considered one of the most influential figures in country music history, earning the nickname "Poet of the Common Man."

Iris Dement has established her own reputation on the folk circuit, but she also toured with Merle, as a keyboardist in his band. They co-wrote "This Kind of Happy," and she covered his song "Big City" on a Merle tribute album.

Songwriters at Play brings Merle and Iris together again, with a celebration of their songs performed by local and touring musicians. Show begins at 2pm in the Events Lounge of Moonstone Cellars in Cambria.

Tickets are $25 general admission ($20 for wine club members), on sale 5/18/25.

Songs include Merle classics such as Mama Tried, Silver Wings, and Life in Prison; plus Iris' well-known ballads Let The Mystery Be, Our Town, and When My Morning Comes Around.

Performing artists include Zoe FitzGerald Carter, Jonathan Low-Fi, Victoria Roberts, Bradly Coats, Maurice Tani, Jubal Jake, James Combs, and the duo called Familiar Strangers.

Host Steve Key has appeared at Moonstone many times, as host of song contests, songwriters showcases, and also guest host of the Open Mic. Songwriters at Play has produced several tribute concerts at Moonstone, including John Prine, Elton John, and Joni Mitchell.
